In the summer of 2009, I did a film project entitled When I Touch Your Forehead, Open Your Eyes (A Hypnosis Project for Lab09), for the Luleå Art Biennial in Sweden, a hundred-odd kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. During a three-month period, local residents were invited to be hypnotized individually in a small wooden chamber erected in one room of the museum. The sessions were videotaped and they all shared a single premise: once the individual had fallen into a deep trance, the hypnotherapist would re-enact a scene from William Friedkin’s 1973 film The Exorcist by touching the subject’s forehead, telling them to open their eyes, suggesting that they are in a completely empty room, and asking what they see.
